American consumers are on edge. They’re agitated about food and gas prices. They’re anxious about geo-political tensions. They’re irritated by divisive politics. The home furnishings industry is responding this week by unveiling designs to soften the stress and calm the commotion.
As the fall High Point Market gets underway – drawing over 40,000 retail buyers and interior designers to shop over 2,000 suppliers of furniture, lighting and home décor – there’s hardly a sharp edge in sight, says Patricia Bowling, vice president of communications for the American Home Furnishings Alliance (AHFA).
“From dining tables and dressers to sofas and sectionals, rounded corners and curvaceous shapes are dominating new products this week,” Bowling observes. Complementing these softer edges are scalloped aprons, bulbous table bases and bowed drawer fronts alongside upholstered pieces designed to cradle weary homeowners.
“New upholstered furniture, in particular, is focused on providing tactile satisfaction, offering a cushioned sensation not unlike a hug,” says Bowling.
AHFA has more than 250 member companies spanning all styles and price points of residential furniture. This overview of their new products at the October 17-21 High Point Market reveals additional trends consumers can expect to see in stores and online by next spring.

Bernhardt Furniture Company

Media contact: Heather Eidenmiller

Two new case goods collections strike opposite ends of the design spectrum at Bernhardt this fall. On one end is Pavilion, a modern group in a dark “Maduro” finish with hints of Brutalist architectural influences. Dramatic wood grains in oak solids and veneers are outlined with geometric lines of inlaid metal. The champagne bronze hardware is minimal. A faux marble tabletop offers dramatic veining to complement the bold wood grain. In contrast, Chatham Park is inspired by modern cottage style and offers softened profiles with feminine charm and tactile details. Natural materials point out the group’s coastal influences while scalloped edges, sweeping curves and subtle hardware reinforce its gentle, organic forms. A warm linen, faux plaster finish on select accents complements the primary “Sunbar” finish on oak and ash veneers. This fall Bernhardt’s Artist in Residence is Chicago-based painter Brian Sindler, whose work will be displayed in the showroom’s second floor gallery. www.bernhardt.com

Living Visual Poetry is a new collection from Thayer Coggin designer Rick Lee that explores the intersection of functional design and art. At the heart of Living Visual Poetry is his Petals Collection, featuring organic shapes, expressive materials and a playful sense of movement that imbues sofas, settees, chairs and ottomans with individual character. Hidden feet allow the rounded forms to appear to hover just above the floor. The sweeping curves, asymmetrical profiles and fully upholstered forms require complex frame construction, precise tailoring and considerable hand work. Joining Petals is Lee’s Beep Beep Chair, inspired by a bird suspended in mid-flight. Its sleek, tapered stainless steel tubing frame lifts the curving upholstered seat and back. Finally, Horton continues Lee’s exploration of fluid, organic forms in cast metal. This sand-cast aluminum side table takes on a gentle, sculptural silhouette with contours that catch light from every angle. www.thayercoggin.com
