Americans Want a “Time-Out” – and New Furniture Designs for 2025 Will Help Them Create The Space

The research was hardly necessary to verify it, but a Forbes Health survey in September found 6 in 10 American adults are feeling stressed by the 2024 election. For those seeking to make their home a refuge from the chaos, there is good news. New furniture designs showcased at the October 2024 High Point Market will help satisfy that quest for calm and tranquility, reports the American Home Furnishings Alliance (AHFA).

“Our homes should be a sanctuary from the stress we face day-to-day. Even if you just focus on creating one ‘snug’ little space, you can make 2025 the year you commit to boosting the comfort quotient in your home,” suggests AHFA Vice President of Communications Patricia Bowling.

According to Houzz, a home furnishings website that connects homeowners with furniture nd home improvement resources, the number of searches for “organic modern” ideas for home interiors skyrocketed 245 percent in the first quarter of 2024 versus 2023. Furniture manufacturers have anticipated ongoing consumer interest in this style and have given it careful attention in new collections this fall.

The relaxed and restful “organic modern” furnishings and accessories in the spotlight at the High Point Market, the largest exhibition of new residential furniture designs in the world, include upholstery with undulating shapes in natural fabrics that reflect nature’s hues. Accents are in stone, leather, raffia, cane and other natural materials, and wood finishes are light and casual or rough-hewn.

As in politics today, another side of the design spectrum is striking an equally strong chord, and it emphasizes darker fabrics and finishes that can also prove soothing. Mental Health America, a national nonprofit dedicated to promoting mental health and well-being, notes that exposure to dark, somber colors can help bring your energy level down if you’re feeling overstimulated or frantic.

No surprise then that Houzz found searches for “dark and moody” living rooms up 130 percent in the first three months of 2024. Also trending this year is homeowners’ quest for a small, comforting space to hide out for a self-imposed time-out from the tumultuous outside world.

The British have a term for small, private rooms that evoke a feeling of calm and relaxation. They are called a “snug,” and the number of Houzz website visitors searching for inspiration to create a “snug” jumped 157 percent in the first quarter of 2024 over the same time period in 2023. “Dark academia” is another design aesthetic enjoying a moment. It is characterized by upholstery in dark plaids, equally dark leather and case goods with strong architectural influences.

Most products introduced at the fall High Point Market will begin appearing in stores in spring of 2025, in time to help Americans create spaces that bring them comfort and solace for the years ahead. This summary of new products was assembled by AHFA and represents all styles and price point of residential furniture for the U.S. market.
