Event Information:
Many AHFA member companies source or produce laminated home furnishings products that include composite wood as a component – and that makes them subject to Title VI of the Environmental Protection Agency’s Toxic Substances Control Act, otherwise known as the formaldehyde rule.
AHFA will hold a workshop on Wednesday, February 15, to assist these member companies in preparing to comply with the last milestone in the formaldehyde rule: the March 22, 2024 deadline for purchasing and using only no-added formaldehyde (NAF) or phenol resins to adhere wood or bamboo veneers to EPA-certified hardwood plywood, medium density fiberboard or particleboard panels.
Companies that “fabricate” furniture using laminated composite wood products that have not switched to an NAF or phenol resin by the March 22, 2024 deadline will be considered “panel producers” under the rule and subject to all record-keeping and third-party certification requirements currently applied only to panel producers.
The workshop will provide compliance guidance, including a discussion of glue options. Presenters include Travis Snapp and Joel Oser of Benchmark International, who will detail compliance requirements and outline a compliance strategy. Michael Sullivan of Womble Bond Dickinson, Atlanta, will discuss strategies for managing a company’s risk factors related to formaldehyde rule compliance.
